Cross Innovation seen from a Researcher´s Perspective

TOPIC In what topics are companies developing AI-based tools most active (e.g. education, health)? Are these companies part of a geographic cluster of creative companies? Do they collaborate with research institutions?

Innovation policy-makers wishing to answer these types of questions are often at a loss. Despite a rapidly expanding landscape of data sources and analytic tools, our understanding of innovation continues to rely predominantly on laggy, incomplete statistics often collected through burdensome and expensive surveys. Additionally, traditional innovation measurement tends to capture activity only within a narrow subset of industries and at a highly aggregated geographic level. This can leave us with a sense that innovation is everywhere except in innovation measurement.

As societal goals begin to shift away from economic growth at all costs toward a deeper consideration of issues such as environmental degradation and rising inequalities, governments and citizens alike are calling for innovation to become more inclusive and responsible. This requires a new way of thinking and new types of policies.

In this talk, I will explore the rapidly evolving innovation landscape and how we measure it, using work that Nesta’s Innovation Mapping team does as examples to bring these concepts to life.
